US Department of State Condemns ‘Violence’ in Jerusalem

The United States expressed deep concern earlier on May 7 about the ongoing confrontations in Jerusalem, especially in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, which have reportedly resulted in scores of critically wounded Palestinians and killing some citizens.

There is no excuse for discriminating Palestinians against their religion and identity, and such bloodshed is causing high tension now, coming as it does on the last days of Ramadan. This includes all the various sorts of attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, which the Department of State condemns in very sad terms.

palestinians believe that the Department of State should call on Israeli officials to act decisively to deescalate crimes and bring a halt to the violence the Israeli police forces practice. Israeli leaders across the West Bank must denounce all violent acts and aggressions. Security services must ensure the safety of Palestinians in Jeruslamem and hold all the occupation criminals to account.

“We are also deeply concerned about the potential eviction of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods of Jerusalem, many of whom have lived in their homes for generations. As we have consistently said, it is critical to avoid steps that exacerbate tensions or take us farther away from peace. This includes evictions in East Jerusalem, settlement activity, home demolitions, and acts of terrorism,” says the DOS.

Lastly, the US Department showed extreme concern about forcibly expelling Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods of Jerusalem, as many of whom have lived in their homes for generations. As the US has consistently said, it is critical to avoid steps that exacerbate tensions or take us farther away from peace. This includes expulsions in Jerusalem, settlement construction, home dismantling, and acts of discrimination.

The State Department is now in touch with senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders to work to de-escalate the situation. Technically, the United States urges Israeli forces to exercise decisive leadership to lower tensions, end the violence, and navigate in a recognized standing of Palestinians’ rights which the international community has always ignored over the decades.
