At least 28 are hurt after Spanish fairground merry go round ‘snaps in half


At least 28 people, most of them children, have been injured when a merry-go-round collapsed at a fairground in Spain.Witnesses described ‘horror’ scenes as the attraction’s main support appeared to snap in two, flinging those on board to the ground and crushing them under the metal.The accident happened at about 2am at the San José de la Rinconada fair, in the Sevillian town of La Rinconada.An 11-year-old girl was reportedly airlifted to hospital with serious head and leg injuries, along with a woman who had similar injuries.A 13-year-old girl was also taken to hospital suffering serious head injuries, reports El Espanol, and four more children aged between 12 and 14 years were taken to a hospital in Seville.Nine others were also taken to hospital with an additional 19 treated for injuries at the event. Two people were treated at the scene in a mobile intensive care unit before being taken to hospital.Police have opened an investigation to confirm the cause of the accident.The attraction, which belongs to the Mundopark fair, was built in 2001, and had passed all the required safety inspections, according to the Spanish press. Javier Fernandez, the mayor of La Rinconada, told The Sun: ‘The accident leaves us speechless. We hope that our boys and girls will recover from what they experienced today both psychologically and physically.’We have stopped the fair and opened an investigation into what happened.’In a statement, Emergencies 112 Andalusia said they started to receive numerous calls from witnesses that an attraction seemed to have lost control and had become detached.The same sources requested assistance for several injured people. Police, fire crews and the Civil Guard all rushed to the scene.
